The seventh floor of Malmaison York hotel boasts a wrap-around destination restaurant and bar with Pan-Asian cuisine, Sora. The bar is purposely set lower to allow for guests to have uninterrupted views of York Minster when ordering beverages. The bar, restaurant and terraces see the entire floor plate optimised for guest use and panoramic views of York. Conceptually, the space takes on a more separate identity to the hotel and focuses on the industrial heritage and extensive green spaces of York.
The bar is reached by a dedicated express lift which is lined in gold metal and a smoked oak floor, on arrival guests are greeted by a large bespoke moveable glass wall, designed meticulously with NorthStar’s joinery division, each glass panel, is either fluted or clear and features a swivel mechanism to obscure or reveal the view beyond, creating a bespoke view and artwork each day for guests. Nature inspired upholsteries and soft furnishings contrast against crittall dividing screens which allow the large open plan space to be broken down into more intimate areas for functions. The spaces are designed to capitalise on the view with seating facing out a sunken bar area and a general blur of the lines of inside and out. A bold striped ceiling sits within the centre of the space directing guests gaze out towards the Minster.
