Collaborating with Japanese retailer franc franc, Dexter Moren Associates created an eye-catching window display which was showcased in the city’s Xintiandi shopping centre.
DMA were one of nine British practices chosen by RIBA London from over 80 applicants for the Shanghai Shop Window project. The brief was to design an innovative and engaging architectural installation based on the theme ‘play your style’.
We based our concept on the game ‘Mikado’ meaning ‘Emperor of Japan’, where coloured sticks are dropped and players have to skilfully remove their chosen colours. We created a super scale version of the game using traditional bamboo
scaffolding methods to form a series of self supporting structures to the three facades of the shop, reflecting the random formations of the sticks. Locally sourced bamboo poles were used, featuring LED-lit cut-outs for increased effect.
