Since the opening of the Tate Modern art gallery and Southwark Underground Station on the Jubilee line, Union Street, Great Suffolk Street and Holland Street have linked together to form a key pedestrian route known as the ‘Design Trail’.
Located on this main route is Hilton London Bankside, Tate Modern’s closest 5 star hotel.
Dexter Moren Associates’ design for Bankside sits inside strict height constraints with the hotel conceived as two adjoining forms, one low and one tall, relating to existing and proposed neighbouring buildings.
The two forms are linked by an internal lightwell and a glazed entrance, which echoes the urban character at the junction of Farnham Place and Great Suffolk Street.
The hotel’s layered brick, metal and glass façade is designed to create a contemporary insertion into the building typology of the locale whilst retaining a common material language with the area.
