This competition winning design for a 218 bedroom hotel with restaurant, bar and conference facilities for Kew Green Hotels was officially opened today at a ceremony attended by Mr Bill Marriott. It represents the first new build “Courtyard” brand in the UK.
Located in a woodland pocket site positioned within the curtilage of Gatwick Airport South terminal and adjoining a 16th Century listed building; context and design aspirations together posed a very complex set of conditions. Archaeological & natural preservation, acoustics, sustainability and aviation requirements were met within challenging cost parameters. In addition, they also informed the resulting design and construction in a positive manner so that the original design intent was achieved.
Dexter Moren Associates were appointed as lead consultants and concept architects, taking the scheme through all subsequent RIBA stages until its recent completion on site.
In addition to the main building design role, DMA were appointed separately to carry out the interior design for the hotel requiring the interpretation and development of an existing brand version new to the UK market, whilst also carrying out the branding design for public areas and marketing use.
All design roles required close coordination with Marriott in the development of an overall design that has set a strong benchmark for future developments of this type in the UK.
