DMA and LHG (London Hotel Group) have won planning permission for a development which will breathe new life into a vacant 0.5-acre brownfield site at 111–113 Tooting High Street. The plans include a 221 room aparthotel with a café and restaurant, plus a rebuilt community club house and outdoor public green space.
Herbert Lui, director, DMA: “We had strong support and consent for the development and the planning journey was swift.”
Christian Desira, Director, LHG: “Tooting is a lively and growing area, attracting residents and tourists alike. Our new c£40million aparthotel development responds to the needs of the local community by creating a purpose-built community hub, as well as meeting a currently unfulfilled need for hotel accommodation for visitors, in and around the Tooting area. The aparthotel will be operated by a well-known international hotel brand, and will achieve a four-star rating.”
The new aparthotel is expected to bring an additional c£1.01 million pa spend to businesses within the town centre and provide approximately 75 FTE long-term employment opportunities.
Taking its place alongside districts in Florence, Seoul and New York, Tooting was recently voted into the Top 10 “coolest” neighbourhoods by Lonely Planet, who praised the area’s multiculturalism, eclectic shopping and quirky bars and cafes, plus its access to green spaces including Tooting Bec Common with its leisure areas and lido.
The design creates a simple, high quality building that uses a pared-back palette of materials to respond to the character of the area. The old club house will be rebuilt with a safe landscaped courtyard with café and children’s play area.
The scheme is expected to start on site in August 2018 with a provisional completion date of July 2020, with an anticipated opening in August of the same year.
DMA and LHG have recently worked together on several well received developments, such as the £90 million hospitality hub at 585-603 London Road, Croydon, and the 181 room landmark Best Western Plus London Wembley Hotel.
