We are thrilled to announce four DMA finalists for the Britlist 2021 by Hotel Designs.
Sarah Yuma, Interior Designer -Rising Star of the Year
Although Sarah only joined DMA two years ago, in that short period she has proven herself a key member of the design team on numerous major hotels and a wine bar, under the difficult constraints of a national lockdown. Displaying a keenly creative eye and valuable administrative abilities, she is a talented young designer with an excellent and wide-ranging skillset, which she has been only too happy to put to good use when conveying her designs. Moreover, Sarah then follows through from concept to documentation, imbuing any projects she works on with originality and helping to contribute to DMA’s enviable record of repeat business. As well as working on a considerable project workload she has been integral to keeping the design library up to date, researching and reaching out to new and interesting suppliers, and organising a range of CPD’s and presentations to keep the design team informed of the latest developments in an ever-expanding and creatively fluid industry.
Clara Mason, Interior Designer – Interior Designer of the Year
Clara is an interior designer with specialist experience in the hospitality sector. Striving to push the boundaries of conventional design, she believes that the opportunity to influence how people interact with the world is a particularly exciting part of the work that we do. She is passionate about creating timeless spaces that are responsive to their environments and user needs. She is instinctively artistic with a keen sense of commercial awareness and has committed to honing her skills creatively, technically and administratively, and furthermore displays a strong team spirit. Clara’s recent projects include a luxury destination wine bar, part of the Nine Elms development, and a 100 bed hotel refurbishment in West London. And the Westin Hotel City of London, a 220 room 5* property, which includes 10 suites and nine private residences.
Ed Murray, Associate – Architect of the Year
Ed is an accomplished associate and architect who has led a wide range of projects for independent owners and international brands across the entire hospitality spectrum. He has meticulous attention to detail, a good sense of perspective and a proven track record in delivering projects from conception to completion. His ability to coordinate and manage large teams, his rapport with colleagues, clients, design teams and contractors alike makes him an indispensable interface between projects and their stakeholders. Ed’s role goes well beyond the purely architectural and he is also involved in the practice’s inclusivity forum group as well mentoring other team members. Additionally, he is a company culture champion, working closely with colleagues on personal development & HR issues. Ed previously led the on-site delivery of the multi-award winning five-star Hilton London Bankside hotel, and for the last two and a half years he has been leading the delivery of the Westin London City, in the City of London. This new-build 222-bed five-star hotel, and nine residential apartments will be the first under Marriott’s Westin brand in the UK.
Herbert Lui, Partner – Architect of the Year
Originally from Singapore, Herbert completed his architectural education in the UK and has been working in London since 1999. He started working with Dexter Moren as a Part Two Architectural Assistant, working up to a Partner at the practice. In his time at Dexter Moren Associates, Herbert has led numerous large scale mixed-used projects ranging from residential to hospitality-led uses both in the UK and internationally. Despite the pandemic, Herbert has been working on several notable international projects in Africa, and delivered designs for 2 hotels, in Cotonou and Porto novo, a seaside resort master plan comprising a 250-room lifestyle hotel and residential villas. Later in the year, he won a commission to design a new hotel in Lagos which include mid-level spa and sky terrace, a rooftop pool and bar. In Herbert’s twenty-two-year tenure at Dexter Moren Associates, he has mentored many young designers and formed lasting relationships with many clients and fellow consultants. He strongly believes that a well-designed and successful project is the product of collaboration and not just a credit to the architect.
Congratulations to all the finalists and we look forward to celebrating with you in November!
