Modern furniture, quirky details and big bursts of colour. These are all features of the public areas at the new Holiday Inn Express Aberdeen Airport. Owned and operated by Dominvs, the hotel opened its doors in May 2015. Dexter Moren Associates’ team of specialist hotel interior designers have created contemporary interiors that make a point of difference amongst existing hotel stock in the airport’s vicinity.
Celebrated as a hub of industrial activity, Aberdeen is home to a thriving seaport and granite quarries. The interiors scheme makes links to the city’s heritage and translates the youthful, fresh qualities of the brand, providing clean streamlined spaces with functionality, friendliness and fun at its heart. A bold chevron pattern covers the walls in softer tones of the brand colours blue and green. Bute fabrics manufactured in Scotland are widely used for the furniture upholstery and the bright, vivid carpets are a modern play on the pattern of argyle socks, further linking the scheme to its Scottish location. Raw copper factory lights and polished concrete columns provide a backdrop for bright blue fishing boat rope space dividers, all of which nod to the fishing and industrial culture of the Aberdeen Lowlands.
All zones provide USB / power points so that guests have the facility to charge their phones or laptops and connect to Wi-Fi. A mix of high seating, dining, banquette and lounge seating has been used to make the space feel comfortable and friendly. The open lobby is zoned by storage walls, floor to ceiling rope divisions and built in banquette seating creating different areas to rest, work and play in.
Lindsey Bean-Pearce, Associate and project leader, said: “By being clever with a limited budget the hotel’s public spaces make a big impact. The finished scheme relates to both the original brief and budget incredibly well, whilst it was challenging it was fun to see what could be done to inject colour and playfulness into the space without overspending.”
A vibrant colour palette teamed with raw materials and playful design elements aim to push the Holiday Inn Express brand forward whilst creating a bright, open space to make guests feel welcome and comfortable.
