Grand Parade Brighton
Prominently located opposite the Royal Pavilion, the design of this new 7-storey block of 33 flats respects the height, scale and materials of adjoining buildings in a contemporary manner. The curved street façade features an inner glazed wall and outer stucco screen between which are sea-facing balconies, whilst at the top floors the building steps back to provide rooftop penthouses. Materials and bright colours, intending to reflect seaside context, include a red brick base, ochre fins and horizontal indigo canopies set against white stucco and glass. This project received enthusiastic English Heritage and Royal Fine Arts support and was exhibited at the RIBA housing awards.
