Pongwe Resort Zanzibar

The design concept for the Intercontinental Pongwe Resort is steeped in the rich tradition of Swahili traditional architecture, reflecting the mix of substantial Stonetown structure with informal beachfront bungalow.

Fronting the white sandy beaches of the Indian Ocean, the focus of the resort is a substantial 'fort' building surrounded by an organic arrangement of informal village like structures. This narrative village is hidden within the indigenous seaside vegetation and discovered, almost surprisingly, after negotiating a winding access route.

Besides the main 'fort' building there are a collection of subsidiary 'official' formal structures dotted around the expanse of the kingdom to give orientation and structure to the land. Apart from the obvious attraction of the sea, an inland an island surrounded by a lagoon forms the other activity node which will also be the focus of night time activity. The village is entirely car free with a large car-park hidden, along with staff accommodation and servicing, within peripheral vegetation.
