Marriott Gatwick
This competition winning entry for a new 220 bed hotel is conveniently located within BAA’s Gatwick Airport, a short walk to the South Terminal. Positioned on a unique site adjacent to a 16th Century listed cottage, DMA’s design creates a dramatic juxtaposition between the new and old with a contemporary design, rather than a pastiche, to draw a clear difference between the two structures. A double volume glazed façade fronts the listed buildings, accommodating a restaurant, bar and lobby. The hotel rooms are stepped back and are clad in a patinated mixture of green colour coated metal insulated panels which reference the surrounding landscape. A flush façade and treble glazing achieves necessary acoustic performance beneath the flight path. Internally the hotel features a dramatic atrium which creates a light filled contemporary multi-function breakout space. The bedroom wings are oriented around the central space providing internal and external views. Working closely with Marriott, the interiors continue the approach of the architecture and feature a range of materials and elements which reference the surrounding environment. The hotel represents Marriott’s first new UK Courtyard.
"We have worked with Dexter and his team on a number of projects now and on each one we have received a first class, innovative and flexible service. Dexter brings a wealth of hotel experience and his creativity has added value to all of the projects he has helped us with; furthermore his laid back manner and good humour makes him a pleasure to work with."
